What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a
relaxed, naturally occurring state of mind which we enter every
day.
You may have entered this trance-like state when
driving along a familiar route or watching television.
Suddenly you snap back to the present moment and
realise you’ve been on “autopilot” for the last
few minutes. Hypnotherapy uses techniques to deepen this relaxed
state. It is quite common for clients to say
things like "I can't remember when last I felt so relaxed".
Relaxation is one thing, but this combined with a skilled hypnotherapist
is the reason you can get profound change in such a short period
of time.
Is Hypnosis safe? Hypnosis is completely safe. You are in control
and can terminate the session at any time. It is a soothing,
relaxing and enjoyable experience. The American and British Medical
Associations have approved the use of hypnosis for more than 40
years.
Can Hypnosis make me tell secrets? Not at all. You will not divulge any information
that you would not ordinarily divulge. You always have a choice,
and your brain does not stop functioning or reasoning just because
you are hypnotised. What if I do not wake up?
No
one has ever got stuck in a state of hypnosis. It simply cannot
happen. It’s not possible to “get stuck” in
hypnosis. If the hypnotist left the room you would either fall
asleep and wake up naturally, or your inner mind would realize
that there was no voice guiding you, and you would emerge as
if you had been in a deep sleep.
Can anyone be Hypnotised? Yes, every can be hypnotised providing they are
willing to be hypnotised and give their permission and they have
no fear in relation to being hypnotised.
Once any fear has been eliminated 100% of people can be easily
hypnotised. Can Hypnosis make me do anything against my will? Absolutely not. This is probably the biggest myth
of all. Stage hypnotists seem to make people do strange things
while hypnotised, but the truth is that these people are doing
these things because they have a desire to be outrageous. If the
stage hypnotists chooses their subjects carefully they will have
willing participants. You will never do anything, or accept any
suggestion that violates your morals or values.
If that was possible, I would already be retired as all my clients would have
deposited large amounts of money into my bank account!! How Does Hypnotherapy Work? When you have entered the relaxed hypnosis state,
from there we bypass the conscious mind and go straight to the
unconscious.
By doing so we can eliminate unwanted ways of behaving and install
more empowering behaviors that you want. So whether you want to
stop smoking, eat more healthily, reduce stress or have more confidence,
then you will find hypnosis a great help. In the state of hypnosis
it is very easy to change the negative habits or behavior patterns
of a lifetime by communicating with the unconscious.
What if I can’t be hypnotized?
Any normally intelligent person can be hypnotized. This has more to do
with the desire of the individual than the ability to be hypnotized. Many
people think that because they are very strong-willed that they would make
poor hypnosis subjects. This isn’t true, in fact, these people possess
concentration skills that normally give them great success with hypnosis.
How Will I Know If I am Hypnotised?
Many people can
not tell the difference between hypnosis and the waking state.
You certainly feel very relaxed during the process.
Afterwards clients are surprised at the automatic positive changes
in their daily behaviors and feelings. A good hypnotherapist
will show you by various tests that you are indeed hypnotised.
Do I have to believe in hypnosis for it to work?
No. The degree to which you can be hypnotized is not completely
related to how much you believe in it. There have been some
amazing results from hypnotic suggestion on people who have
claimed that they were not hypnotized.
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
Some conditions require a referral, however the most common
uses of hypnosis such as weight loss, smoking cessation, etc.
do not. If you aren’t sure, ask your doctor or hypnotist.
